With some trees, I agree. I don't have even a minimus of concern when, for example, we cut Christmas trees from the Christmas tree farm down the road. Nor when I thin out weak saplings that are never going to grow to be anything meaningful. But I do have a reaction when big trees go down.

Thinking about this whole thing, for me empathy is reserved for humans and those animals that I feel have emotions I can respond to -- cats, dogs, elephants, chimpanzees, horses, and such like. Below that, I have other feelings for other animals, less for large trees, even less for flowers, and little at all for bugs. But none of those rise to the level of empathy, at least for me.
