This was at one time something so solemn and sacred that all of the members of one's community would be called upon to give the utmost respect and support to the relationship bound by such a vow.

As I've been following this issue, my thinking has been evolving. I have been reluctant to go so far as to endorse same-sex marriage but I think I've finally come around to that basically for the same reason that Sullivan puts forward. Civil marriage is already such a crock that it's probably about time to put a fork in it. It really has next to nothing to do with reproduction anymore.

I, too, am nostalgic about the former alleged sanctity of marriage as you describe it. Seems to me now that if people want that kind of commitment, they should not rely solely on civil marriage but add an additional level of a religious or comparable contract atop it.

"That is far from giving anyone your approval for their behavior."

You can certainly withhold your approval in all instances...as can others toward you and YOUR Institutions.

"At the core of our being we find our will. The thing that attracts us to any purpose in life. Of our own free will we make a vow of commitment. A marriage vow is our free will commitment to honor our relationship with another as our chosen path in life"

So you do support homosexual marriage. Good fella!
