NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp. (NYSE:NEM - News), the world's largest gold miner, on Thursday posted higher earnings thanks to a rise in gold prices.
The Denver company earned $90.8 million, or 22 cents per share, in the second quarter, up from $67.1 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

That is a penny above the average analyst forecast of 21 cents a share, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc.

Revenue rose nearly 19 percent to $724 million.

Newmont leapfrogged its way to the top of the gold industry last year after an acquisition spree that included buying Australia's Normandy Mining Ltd. and Canada's Franco-Nevada Mining Corp.
