I don't disagree.

But I think that's a different point.

We were, as I recall, talking about individual behavior. It takes an extreme amount of something, don't know what I would call it, to say when faced with questioning on the witness stand, "oh yes, it's better for Society that I tell the truth, because in general truth telling is necessary for the proper functioning of society, so rather than lie and say I only have $120,000 in savings to divide in this divorce I should candidly disclose my Cayman Islands bank account and share it fairly with my soon-to-be-ex spouse."

For society as a whole, honesty may be the best policy. But in specific circumstances many, many individuals believe that dishonesty is the better policy.
