Might be a genetic memory thing

Studies show-don'tja just love that line?-that kids learn languages easily up to the age of about twelve, and then the ability shuts down.

I have noticed that people who are good singers learn languages easier than those those, like me, who can't carry a tune and are as flat as my hat.

Re foreign languages - Americans generally have no opportunity to practice any language other than English in their daily lives. If you or your parents are foreign-born, and/or speak the language at home, or if you have a lot of customers or clients or students who speak another language, then you have a reason to learn or use another language. Spanish of course is a prime example, especially in Miami and Southern Ca. But as a veteran of 12 years of French, I can definitely say, "use it or lose it."
