Hi LindyBill; Re the example of the German "Werwolves".

Re: "The Werewolves specialised in ambushes and sniping, and took the lives of many Allied and Soviet soldiers and officers ..."

This is true, but only if one includes incidents from before the end of the war. The number of US soldiers killed in June 1945 or later was considerably smaller than the number killed in Iraq in the past month.

On the other hand, perhaps the present time is equivalent to that of April 1945. Then, as now, the enemy had not surrendered. Nor, if you count Iraq as part of an Arab nation (like Hitler's Germany was likewise extended into German speaking parts of Europe), is the Arab enemy fully occupied.

The problem with bringing up this comparison is that as time goes on, and the killings continue, people will have to look at the Werwolf examples more carefully. And the differences between now and then are clearly in favor of continuing hostilities.

<<Saddam's Baathist Loyalists>>
or
de-Baathification

There were approximately two million Baathists in the Saddam regime. In 1974 the regime issued decrees that all Baathists who had previously been associated with any other political party (before joining the Baathists) were to be put to death. In 1974 it was also decreed by the regime that any Baathist who left the party and joined any other political party would also be put to death.
In trying to determine who might have been a Baathist for opportunistic reasons, there is no reliable data. It is estimated that 97% of Baathists in Iraq were Baathist because they had no other choice, that still leaves a few more than the <<thousands>> referred to in this article.

You have already posted a link to an article which indicates that prominent Iraqi's who worked closely with Saddam Hussein were still in their houses and were still respected community members after the regime had fallen, this does not bode well for those who believe that de-Baathification is possible.
