There is no particular reason to predict it will grow either stronger or weaker. I have done plenty of business on trust, and have not had to sue once yet, so my experience suggests that most people abide by the precept most of the time.......

To the extent the change has occurred (and that extent might be exaggerated, people like to talk about "the good old days" whether or not they are good), it may be because we are a more mobile society. In the past people didn't move around as much and the average community was smaller. If everyone in a small village knows you, or in a larger town everyone can at least know you by reputation, then getting a reputation as dishonest or one who does not stick by his commitments can be hazardous to your future social, business, or political life. Even in the large cities that developed as we approach modern times, people didn't move around as much and probably knew a lot of people in their neighborhood.
