We are part of a world community whether we admit we are or not. We are too entangled with the rest of the world not to be part of it. I can't see how sticking our head in the sand like a ostrich and saying that we're not part of it, will solve anything.

I did not say that we were not part of a rudimentary world community, I said that we were not citizens of a world community, insofar as citizenship implies being part of a sovereign state. And the international community will, in fact, not go ahead without us, we are the linchpin of the system. No one is talking about disbanding NATO, instead, the Europeans are discussing how to heal the rift. Koffi Annan is talking about reassessing the role of the UN, not condemning the United States......
