Hi Steve,

I recently helped my daughter resurrect her flaky emachine hard drive by deleting the entire disk partition and starting over with fdisk, then reformatting. So far so good. Later I read that doing a low level format returns the drive to its original state. Article said you need to get the low level format software from the disk drive manufacture's web site. Might be worth try, before buying a new drive.

I think the problem is with the drive though because after I reformatted it and tried putting more files onto it it froze my system a couple of times so it may be junk

Steve, the drive has two partitions. One is fine the other one is the problem so I think the drive itself is ok. What I plan to do is to use the XCOPY in DOS to copy all the directories and files to another disk. If that works then zero fill the drive, reformat and see if that makes it functional again.
