That is to give up the Taiwan Relations Act in exchange for China?s support in UN

Is your "Chinese Friend" a member of the Chinese Government, or just delusional? As they say in Asia, "Never Hoppen, GI!!"

I have a Chinese friend who made a suggestion of how U.S. can get out of Iraq quick and clean. That is to give up the Taiwan Relations Act in exchange for China’s support in UN....

I'm sure dropping Israel would "work wonders" too.

But just how would we ensure that China keeps any of their side of the bargain, in terms of support of us in the UN ?

China may not have literally banged their shoe on the desktop, but they have nonetheless vowed to bury us, and they are far more patient than most. I think any deals with them should be *very* circumspect, even if it were remotely feasible your friend's idea would pass.

<give up the Taiwan Relations Act>

If Taiwan ever seriously thinks the U.S. is not going to stop any threatened invasion by the mainland, then they will quickly become a nuclear power. They could buy one from N. Korea or Iran, or make their own. Timeframe: months, not years.

China isn't serious about invading Taiwan, anyway, not until the U.S-China balance of power has tilted a lot more in China's favor. Timeframe: decades.

It would take more than China's support, to get the UN to pull our chestnuts out of the Iraqi fire.

Summary: dumb idea.

ML, It doesn't sound like a good deal to me. Sacrificing Taiwan for some sort of agreement on Iraq seems a bad idea. Taiwanese seem quite happy as they are without having China running the show.

Taiwan could take over the rest of China. Where does the weird idea come from that the mainlander unelected political bosses should take over Taiwan? Landmass and worthiness aren't synonymous. Nor is it the case that 95% should cannibalize 5% [that's what slavery was about] even if they want to. If the 5% want freedom, and they aren't getting away with a giant oil field or something that belongs to everyone, then the other 95% should mind their own business.

Actually, the other 95% would probably like the freedom too, but in this case, I don't think Hu Jintao will be allowing citizen's initiated referenda any time soon.

The quick and clean solution is to call for a UN Reconstitution Conference at some of Saddam's palaces, then have the New UN take over Iraq as a protectorate and subsequently a founding member of the New World Order and headquarters of it [or at least the regional headquarters].

Taiwan might like to be the second founding member. That way China could forget about having to reintegrate Taiwan as just another province and get on with CDMA and cyberspace developments and making a lot of money and getting wealthy, instead of getting blown up by getting greedy and megalomaniac over Taiwan.

You are so lucky to be able to get all the good ideas here.

UN participation in Iraq would be counterproductive.... name one country that the UN has "rebuilt" into a nation that can stand on it's own..... More than likely you'd get an overmanaged, overgoverned, bureaucratic nightmare....

Meanwhile, we've rebuilt Japan, Germany, and Italy into fairly decent democracies... and can do the same in Afghanistan and Iraq given a minimal amount of time...

Why we'd link this to Chinese issues with Taiwan is beyond me...

How about if the U.S. gives up the Taiwan Relations Act in exchange for China pulling it's occupation forces out of Tibet?

Works for me. I don't see Hong Kong suffering as part of China.
