Samsung Electronics Debuts Camcorder Cellphone

SEOUL, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Samsung Electronics (KSE:05930) has recently unveiled South Korea's first camcorder cellphone, bringing the nation closer to the era of high-quality streaming-video multimedia services.
The new handset, intended for third-generation multimedia service based on CDMA (code division multiple access) technology, is capable of two-way video calls, video-on-demand service and recording and storing video complete with sound, company officials said Friday.

Camera phones are restricted to still pictures, but the camcorder phone can shoot and store video and sound clips, they stressed.

"While color display models lead the Korean market, cellphone manufacturers are coming out with a steady stream of new products that stress multimedia functions," said Cho Shin-hyung, a Samsung spokesman. "In keeping with the trend, Samsung has chosen to add a camcorder as the latest concept in its line of mobile phones."

The main screen of the phone, the SCH-V310, is a TFT-LCD that can reproduce 262,000 color shades, while a 256-color organic electro-luminescent (EL) display is on the outside, he explained. "Samsung Electronics will soon complete development of more advanced camcorder phone models with even more sophisticated functions," according to the spokesman.

He said the SCH-V310, launched in the domestic market last month, is the world's first camcorder phone built on the basis of CDMA technology. CDMA is a synchronized cellular technology developed by the U.S.-based wireless solutions firm Qualcomm Inc.

Camcorder phones are essential to the implementation of the synchronized third-generation multimedia cellular service, which the South Korean government dubbed IMT-2000. SK Telecom, which launched its own third-generation cellular service at the beginning of July on the basis of Samsung's camcorder phones, said Friday an estimated 10,000 locals have subscribed to the futuristic service thus far.

"The camcorder cellular service allows subscribers to enjoy vivid and streaming video multimedia services, such as VOD (video on demand), MOD (music on demand), video phone functions, multimedia message, TV broadcasting, the Internet and many other communication functions," said Kwon Chul-gun, an SK Telecom spokesman.

According to Samsung engineers, a 300,000-pixel camera built into the camcorder phone features a 2-power zoom lens with nine settings. It can shoot and store up to 20 minutes of video clips with sound, and the user only has to press the shutter once to shoot clips at 11 frames a second.

"Mobile phone technology began with black and white displays, and then evolved into color displays. Next-generation models have built-in cameras, and now camcorders are being built in," said Kim Jong-In, senior director of Samsung's Product Planning Team, expecting the camcorder models to make up 10-15 percent of the Korean mobile phone market this year.
