They know they can't defeat us, in any military sense. They don't have to. They just have to do enough damage, and hang on long enough, to make the conflict a political liability. I think that was Saddam's war plan. And Osama's too.

That means that no matter how much our politicians rant about staying the course, everybody knows that we will back out if the affair becomes a political liability. Which is why the battle has to be turned over to the Iraqi government as soon as possible. Killing foreigners is one thing, but killing fellow Iraqis raises the potential of inter-tribal retaliation. They know they can't defeat us, in any military sense. They don't have to. They just have to do enough damage, and hang on long enough, to make the conflict a political liability I think you over-play the impact of the current guerilla conflict in Iraq.. We're killing more of them than they are of us... We're taking out their leadership and command and control. We are taking out their arms caches one by one (read a comment that one contained 2,000 RPGs), shutting down the border between Syria and Iraq, and winning over many of the tribal leaders one by one... And the tribal leaders seem to be the most important "glue" to social cohesion in the country. There was a good article in a recent Washington Post (or Times?) discussing how we're even paying "blood money" to compensate the families of those who were accidentally killed or maimed during the war.. For the Baathist resisters to win over the country, they would have to possess the kind of logistical support that hasn't been seen since the Ho Chi Minh trail.. Because, except for the most hard-core followers, Saddam doesn't have much support in the country. But I agree we need to disengage US forces from this silly @ssed police duty and turn that over to Iraqi police and soldiers. US forces should be relegated to search and destroy missions and quick reaction force missions, in addition to border security. Hawk
