Piazza Returns to Mets With a Flourish

By the Associated Press
customwire.ap.org

In New York, there was no shortage of power in Mike Piazza's return to the Mets' lineup.

Piazza might have been so nervous about his return that he couldn't sleep Tuesday night, but when it was time to play his first major league game since he went out with a severe groin strain May 16 the All-Star catcher homered and drove in five runs in New York's 9-2 victory over San Francisco.

"I'm glad I kind of downplayed everything and told them not to expect too much," Piazza said. "It feels like spring training. I'm excited to be back."

For Mets fans - and his teammates, too - Piazza was a welcome sight.

"Doesn't he do that all the time? I've seen him do it a million times on TV," Mets rookie Jason Phillips said.

Piazza grounded out his first time up, then connected for a two-run shot off Jerome Williams in the third inning.

He chased Williams (5-3) with an RBI single in the fourth. He added a two-run single in the seventh off Matt Herges and left for a pinch-runner to a standing ovation.

Steve Trachsel (11-7) allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings for New York.

Royals' Rout of Yanks Means Free Doughnuts
By TYLER KEPNER
nytimes.com

ANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 13 - The owners of Krispy Kreme doughnut shops in greater Kansas City were probably cursing Jeff Weaver tonight. With another unsightly performance, Weaver, the Yankees' right-hander, made them work overtime.

Whenever the Royals get 12 hits at a home game, every fan in attendance can redeem a ticket stub for a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. With 35,596 fans packed into Kauffman Stadium tonight, Weaver could be responsible for 427,152 free doughnuts.

The Royals mauled him for 13 hits
and nine runs over six and a third innings, and they humbled the Yankees, 11-0, behind Kevin Appier and two relievers. The 11-run margin was the Yankees' widest in a loss this season.
