Digital Camera Forecast Raised for 2003 Semiconductor Business News 08/01/2003, 11:50 AM ET SAN FRANCISCO -- The sizzling growth of digital cameras in the marketplace has prompted one research house to raise its forecast for the product segment this year. Shipments of digital cameras totaled 9.5 million in the second quarter of 2003, up 29 percent from the first quarter of this year, according to a new report from WR Hambrecht + Co. LLC of San Francisco. "Based on the traction we have seen, we now believe total digital camera shipments in 2003 could be in the range of 40-45 million units," according to WR Hambrecht. The previous forecast was 35-to-40 million units in 2003, according to the report. The investment banking firm based its figures from data at the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) in Japan. Japan accounts for 80 percent to 90 percent of the world's digital camera shipments Camera shipments from Japan are 16.8 million units year-to-date, up 85 percent from the like period a year ago, according to the report. Year-to-date shipments of cameras less than 3 megapixels (MP) are growing even faster at 268 percent growth. Cameras between 3-4 MP are still the sweet spot of the market.
