If it were 1982 all over again, or even 1991, I would stick with quality and ride it out. But would you really want to do that with ASKJ or any of a thousand others? Is ASKJ even going to be in business 3 years from now?
If you bought DNA 10 years ago, and rode out some fierce volatility, you're in great shape. There are still stocks out there where that can be done.
But the Internet, with its $10 trades, has made trading more practical for small investors. Still, some of the smaller banks and insurance companies really have been excellent LTBH, for the patient investor.
I just treat the market like a pitching machine. It's like Warren Buffett said, "You can stand there with your bat on your shoulder for as long as you want, but the market still has to keep pitching."
