CD, Aug contract is on "delivery", not active anymore, just trading either for delivery or closing the positions. Open interest yesterday: 5.8k
Front contract is Sep, open interest 10 (ten, not 10k).
Lead contract (= highest volume, highes open interest) is the Dec 140k contract.
Sep contract is pale, 14k contracts.

There are essentially only 2 contracts that matter, June and December on which you can trade 5 years out.
The other months are added regularly in order to always have 3 consecutive expiry months, or 3 years out with Feb, Apr, Aug, Oct added.

Rem: silver has another series, July and December being those traded 5 years out.

Hence, re: gold, the Dec futes price matter, not the "cash" neither other expirations.
