twf,

re: But the Japanese won at Pearl Harbor.

The Japanese were/are a country, not terrorists. Maybe I'm starting to understand why you are confused about terrorism.

re: Creating terror is not normally the goal of the terrorist

That's about as funny a statement as I have heard. I suppose the goal of a cook is not food?

Listen, the basis of terrorism has always been the same, it's getting the biggest bang for the buck. These are marginalized political groups, without huge resources. There are probably what, ~2000 Al Quida in the world? Terrorism has always been the same. If you don't have the resources to wage a war for your cause, you do a "senseless" act, to normal citizens, that will create the most irrational fear. The projection of the irrational fear to the populace draws attention, and validates your cause. It becomes 100 times as large as it really was, because it was so random and senseless. Poly Sci 101.

I know it's hard for you to swallow, but you must admit that 9/11 has created change in this country. You admit that, right? At the least, a couple of wars, a few changes in the laws, a few changes in the government, a few changes in security spending. You will agree to that, right?

And I hope you will agree that non-domestic terrorism in this country has been limited to two events in the last 10 years, both initiated by the same individual. Right? In the last 10 years, ALL the airline hijackings have ALL taken place on one day, 9/11, right?

So we can probably both conclude, let me know if I'm making an assumptions here, that 9/11, an action by a very few depraved individuals, has caused us to engage in two wars; change some of our laws; according to Bush make the largest "reorganization" in our government in ~50 years; and increase our spending to such an extent that our deficit is going off the charts.

So. Let me ask you Tim. What is a terrorist?

John

PS Maybe you were not around for the much more frequent terrorism in Europe, ~30 years ago. It seemed like every day a bomb went off in a cafe in Paris or a subway in London. We studied terrorism in those days, the motivations for the acts; the effect on people. It was very serious, and much more immediate than it is today. But for some reason, there was less... something. Angst, I guess. Reaction, for sure.
