SAN DIEGO (Aug. 2) - Officials suspect radical environmentalists set a fire that swept through an unoccupied five-story apartment complex, causing more than $20 million in damage.

A banner reading ``If you build it, we will burn it,'' with the initials ``ELF,'' was found Friday next to the burning building still under construction in the upscale University Town Centre residential neighborhood. No injuries were reported.

The initials may correspond to the Earth Liberation Front, a loose-knit group that describes itself as ``an international underground organization that uses direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the destruction of the natural environment.''

Members of ELF have claimed responsibility for dozens of fires and other acts since 1997, causing $50 million in damages to luxury homes, ski lodges and sport utility vehicles. There was no immediate claim of responsibility posted on the group's Web site.

The group, which only communicates with the press by e-mail, issued a brief and vague statement in response to media inquiries:

``The ELF press office has received no communique for the San Diego fire that took place Aug. 1, 2003, and thus cannot answer any questions as to why this location and city was chosen for the latest ELF action,'' the statement said. ``The banner at the site reading `You build it - we burn it - ELF' is a legitimate claim of responsibility by the Earth Liberation Front.''

San Diego police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and arson experts were investigating.

Capt. Jeff Carle, of the San Diego Fire Department, said three construction workers who were sleeping on the site managed to escape the flames unharmed.

``It could have killed someone,'' said Carle.

Several hundred residents of a building next to the construction site were evacuated as heat from the blaze broke windows and melted plastic blinds in their homes.

The 206-unit complex was part of a larger project approved by the City Council in late 2000 that included a hotel and offices. University Towne Centre is a rapidly growing area of apartment complexes and office buildings east of San Diego's tony La Jolla section.

Carle said if environmentalists were behind the fire, he didn't understand their motivation: More trees would be cut down to rebuild the structure.

Truthseeker...if you really knew me you wouldn't write personal attacks like that. I am one of the most honest web sites that profile stocks on the internet. I do it out of fun not needing the money. MRXT is the first profile I have accepted in over a year. Trust me I get offered many and usually turn them down because most that approach me only want at my readers and club members so they can dump S-8. I have had enough being used by these companies.

MRXT is a different company with a honest motive. JMHO

Truthseeker if you wish to continue attacking my credibility go ahead. This post will probably be the last response you will get from me trying to show you I am a real man with integrity.

Thank you,

Willy

NEW YORK (Aug. 3) - Mike Tyson has filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, claiming his finances are in disarray.

The former heavyweight champion has squandered nearly $300 million in ring earnings through lavish spending and bad advice. Tyson's handlers said in a news release on Friday that Tyson has taken control of himself and wants to resolve his financial problems.

They blamed his out-of-control spending habits and subsequent mounting debt on mismanagement by others.

``As a professional fighter, who relied on others to manage his affairs, he discovered that his debts far exceeded his assets,'' Tyson's attorney Debra Grassgreen said. ``Now, he has taken the lead in bringing order to his financial affairs.''

The fighter frittered away millions on mansions, Bentleys, jewelry, and even Bengal tigers while buying extravagant gifts for his entourage. Don King also took a huge chunk.

Tyson has a $100 million lawsuit pending against King that goes to trial in September. The suit claims King cheated Tyson out of millions after he got out of prison in 1995 and went back to fighting for the promoter.

Earlier this year, as part of a divorce settlement, Tyson agreed to pay his ex-wife, Monica, $6.5 million from future earnings.

Besides his financial problems, Tyson is also facing possible jail time again.

He pleaded innocent last month to misdemeanor assault, harassment and disorderly conduct charges for pummeling two men during a brawl at a Brooklyn hotel on June 21. Tyson's lawyers claimed his actions were justified because the two men allegedly menaced the boxer first by telling him they were armed. Prosecutors say the assault went too far.

Tyson, who served three years in prison for rape in the 1990s, faces up to a year if convicted of the latest charges.

SEATTLE (Aug. 3) - Microsoft Corp. is warning its customers about a computer worm that exploits a flaw in its Internet Explorer browser.

A security bulletin on the company's Web site says Microsoft started investigating a ``mass mailer worm,'' dubbed W32/Mimail(at)MM, late Friday morning.

The worm spreads through e-mail if recipients open an attached zip file - used to condense information so it can move faster over the Internet - then open an HTML file inside the zip file, the bulletin said.

The worm exploits a vulnerability the company addressed in a security bulletin issued April 23, the bulletin said.

On Saturday, Microsoft spokesman Sean Sundwall downplayed the worm's potential to cause major security problems.

If someone opens the e-mail, the zip file and the HTML file, the virus is sent to all e-mail addresses the worm finds on that computer, Sundwall said.

``The damage is simply an annoying e-mail,'' Sundwall said.

Microsoft's Web site directs customers to a security patch designed to fix the problem.

BAGHDAD, (Aug. 2) - Iraq's U.S. governor Paul Bremer tempted Iraqis on Saturday with the prospect of a millionaire lifestyle in a foreign country of their choice in exchange for information on Saddam Hussein's whereabouts.

"Someone told us where to find his sons Uday and Qusay and less than two weeks later we have paid him $30 million and relocated him and his family safely outside Iraq," Bremer told a news conference held near the ex-dictator's former palace.

"We're going to get Saddam too. The only question is who is going to get the $25 million and move to another country."

WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAT

After toppling Saddam in April, U.S. forces announced a reward of up to $25 million for information leading to his capture or proof of his death.

It offered up to $15 million for similar information on each of his feared sons Uday and Qusay, who were killed last month in a fierce shoot-out at a villa in the northern city of Mosul after being betrayed by a former associate.

Bremer said Saddam was finished, even if he had not yet been found, and Iraqis should feel confident about coming forward.

Once the ex-president is dead or in captivity, Bremer said a guerrilla campaign blamed on Saddam loyalists that has killed 53 U.S. soldiers in the past three months was likely to abate.

"It seems to me that bringing (Saddam) to justice either by death or by capturing him will really draw down a curtain on this terrible period," the U.S. administrator said.

"I said after the killing of his two sons that I expected attacks in the short run to increase and that happened for a few days...I would hope that, even if there is a short-term increase in attacks, they would dissipate over time."

Asked whether the United States would consider increasing the reward offered for Saddam, Bremer demurred.

"This is the largest ransom the United States has ever offered," he said. "I think people can live pretty happily on $25 or $30 million...whether they decided to live in Iraq or a Western country."
