Well, I think that we actually ARE moving in that direction. Will it take 10 years - or a 100 - that I don't know, but I do suspect that eventually we'll need to re-think many of our notions about the nature of economy.

Right now a nation like China - conceivably - might be on its way to become so productive as to be able to supply the rest of the planet with most of the needed material widgets. Can we compete with them in the "widget department"? Yes, we can try, but the net result will be just an acceleration in the total global overcapacity.

We, humans, at this point in our history just cannot escape the consequences of our own productivity.
