While I personally didn't find Bob Hope particularly funny, he had many endearing qualities that made it easy to overlook that and still find him entertaining. I have to agree that the piece was in very bad taste. It probably says a lot about Hitchens that he needed to denigrate both Hope and the legions of people who valued him. I'd expect something like this from Dowd.

Read that Hitchens piece. Was shocked and a bit dismayed at why he even wrote it (was Hope friends with Henry K?), because I think he's a good writer, if too often a bit mean-spirited. Just poor taste overall, and incorrect at that. I caught some of an old "Road..." film a few years ago, first one I ever saw. Made me laugh out loud on several occasions.

I was surprised by another Hope film I watched a while ago; he was much more than the golf club-swinging emcee of USO shows. Yet, for that alone Hope was a great man.

Bad form by Hitchens.

I would expect much more from Christopher Hitchens... Cannot understand why he even wrote the article.. What was the point? Hope is gone and what was Christopher trying to do .,, get even for some scorn of years back? It gives the appearance of a bitter writer... Of course the whole article was unnecessary to print in Slate.. Where were they went the article went in....

As for Hope,, he appeared to be a guy who loved his career and being in front of an audience and surrounded by pretty girls.. and he shared it with every GI because he knew that is what they wanted..(the pretty girls).. What a contribution he made to the USO...
