Them's my thoughts.

I also thought the article tended to take the "traditionalist" side as it progressed. I did not know where you came down on programs but I now assume it is not on the "basics" side. Sol Stern's article mentioned a very favorable one done by another "Times" reporter.

The New York Times has given them real help on this front. Though the Department of Education guards access to the schools as if they were military bases in Afghanistan, it recent allowed Times reporter Abby Goodnough to spend a week observing classes at P.S. 172. Goodnough's article glowingly described all-around satisfaction with Month by Month Phonics at the school.

I tried to pull in up in a "Times" search with no success. Abby Goodnough has the education beat on the Metro desk. It may be that they wanted another POV and assigned Traub because of that.

By the by. Sterns article said that the Annual Budget for New York City's schools was twelve billion, for 1.1 million students. That's about an 11K average per student. And the AFL/CIO latest publication on Teacher's salaries in 2001 shows the Average NYC Teacher at 50,0120. When you add bennies and summers off, not too shabby. And I know they just got a major raise. So I don't buy your argument that money is the major problem in NYC.
