You use the machinery of the state against people when you exclude them from having unions. When you confer a benefit on some, and exclude others, the machinery of the state has been used against the excluded. Try it with Jews, for example. If you let all people marry, except for Jews, would you not think the machinery of the state is being used against Jews? I would think that. Substitute homosexuals for Jews, and there you are.
