Wave Systems Up 16% On News Of IBM Deal

NEW YORK -- Wave Systems Corp. (WAVX ) stated that its security software is compatible with International Business Machines Corp.'s (IBM) embedded security subsystem.

Shares recently traded at $4.95, up 53 cents, or 12%, on Nasdaq volume of 24.6 million, compared with average daily volume of 2.2 million. Shares rose 21.1% Monday.

The IBM announcement came on the heels of another announcement last week heralding a deal with Intel (INTC). Last Thursday, Wave Systems said it had reached an agreement with Intel to bundle its software and services onto a future Intel desktop motherboard. Shares hit a 52-week high of $5.04 following the news. Wave Systems reported a net loss of $43.5 million in 2002 including one-time charges, on revenue of $447,000. At its current trading price, the company has a market cap of over $250 million.

The company has not been profitable for the last four years. It is not followed by any analysts tracked by Thomson First Call.

A Wave Systems spokesperson was not immediately available to comment.
