I travel a lot, and if I was heavily armed and felt threatened there would be no end of opportunities for me to kill people in "self-defense" because half the time I do not know what is going on and feel threatened when people around me are just going about their normal business. We drop our troops into a completely foreign culture, with a large cloud over their mission, and then leave them to figure things out for themselves as local people come out of the woodwork taking potshots. Peacekeeping is harder that combat -- and we really only prepare for the easy job of combat. Now the hard part comes and we should get out of the way and let those with experience and commitment to peace do the hard part.
