The decision when a child becomes an adult is entirely an arbitrary decision which varies widely by culture.

That the age when a child can consent varies from subject to subject and from culture to culture and from individual to individual does not obviate the basic validity of the principle that we care for children until they have the capacity to consent. It just makes application either tricky or arbitrary depending on whether you want to accommodate the differences or just assert a blanket age. You haven't denied that we must protect children. You're just fussing about the implementation criteria.
