Al Qaida is global. It takes a global effort. A global effort requires allies. We need to strengthen our alliances. Our allies took great offense to the Bush Doctrine. It is ineffective and it undermines our efforts to work with other countries. It is already dying on the vine. We will need to back away from elective "regime change" as a cornerstone of our foreign policy. Regime change must be reserved for real threats and self-defense.

Iraq is a distraction and a waste of resources. North Korea is out of control -- the worst case scenario is unfolding. They want to talk. We should also want to talk. We should agree to talk in the most time-effective and results-oriented way possible. Including Japan is highly likely to undermine the process. Including China is highly likely to improve the process. We are playing for keeps in North Korea. People with a real concern for US national security understand that Iraq was a mistake and is now an albatross around our necks. We need to cut it loose.
