Nor would it have been quite true. To the extent oil was involved, it was to prevent Iraq from regional hegemony and effective control over Arabian oil, which would have provided him additional wealth to build his arsenal, and given him too much leverage over the developed world. Only incidentally would the invasion undermine Saudi clout.......

It would have been hard to sell the truth -- but it comes far closer to the truth than anything "officially" offered.
