My point was people with no marriage are excluded from some of the potential benefits (and also obligations) of marriage. If the legal benefits are great enough that anyone who is denied them is somehow being discriminated against and if the tradition and importance of marriage has run down to the point where its pretty much shot anyway then it would seem that any two people should be able to get all the benefits even if they are not in any sort of sexual or romantic relationship. But of course they could have a sham marriage or marriage of convenience. An so can homosexuals.

But then many of the benefits are not like a break on your taxes, something or social security survivor benefits. Many are more directly connected to the relationship. Having them with an acquaintance would be helpful. However most of those are available to gay couples.
