The Vietnamese showed a willingness to fight to the last man, woman and child -- in stark contrast to the US troops who struggled to understand why they were being asked to fight a war with a big cloud of doubt hanging over their mission. The Vietnamese were crystal clear what they were fighting for -- freedom from foreign domination. American troops were not so lucky. We could have just nuked the North in a bid to exterminate them all -- not exactly a mission of "liberation". Common sense prevailed and we left in defeat. Vietnam was a bitter lesson -- do not go into war with a cloud over the mission. But we did it again in Iraq.
