Both Lieberman and Bayh are painting themselves into a corner with that tack.

The confusion is in the GOP notion that anyone who disagrees with Bush is "leftist". Which is wrong on two counts:

First, Bush is not "conservative", if you believe he is advocating totalitarian policies for gun control, budget gimmicks and abandonment of personal rights, along with adoption of greater rights vested in gov't than in the people. That's nothing remotely close to "conservative"

Second, the idea of secret evidence being used to wage Executive Branch warfare around the world "on behalf of the Iraqi people" etc., as the administration has claimed, is also not "conservative"

And Dean isn't "left" in opposing spending American lives to help the Iraqi people when Homeland Defense is more pressing, or opposing further gun laws. The closest he could be called "left" is in medical care, and even that is presupposed by balanced budget and overwhelming public support.

I don't think this "too left to win" is going to fly much longer, if the polls continue to come in.
