That depends on whether you mean for the species or the individual (and even at the individual level they can still reproduce- it's just a question of who is loved and desired. If you hang out mostly with men, as you hunt in the forest or sail the seas, it might be very adaptive to love your companion. Love makes people more protective and more courageous than they might ordinarily be- I remember the effect of Patroculus' death on Achilles, for example. ) Neo seemed to be saying it was maladaptive for the species. I don't agree with that either. I read a fine article on why it could be highly adaptive for the species. I will see if I saved it. And of course, there is this....
