I guess I assumed that you meant the reductio argument, because the one you adduced was even more inapplicable:

Argumentum ad absurdum is an argument in which the proposal or idea is ridiculed rather than discussed. For example, one might say that as long as food stamps are being given out, gas stamps should be too. Or, hey, how about beer stamps? The attempt in this distortion is to render the original issue, no matter how meritorious it may have been, to appear so ridiculous by association that no one any longer really considers it serious, so the issue is dropped.
