Soccer stars feted as quake victims suffer

DAYAO, China - It was a dramatic irony on Saturday when soccer fans in Beijing squandered hundreds or even thousands of yuan to be admitted to watch Real Madrid, a world-famous Spanish team, for only 90 minutes, while the families of those killed by an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale in Dayao county, in southwestern China's Yunnan province, were still waiting for promised government compensation.

But it was more appalling that, according to official media, the same Yunnan provincial government that was being slow to pay the handsome 1,000 yuan (US$120) compensation to each family that had suffered a fatality in the quake was lavishing millions on the Spanish soccer stars. The government invited Real Madrid to a training assembly in Kunming, the provincial capital, at a cost of 16 million yuan (nearly $2 million).
