China Online Advertising Spending CNY360 Mln In 1H 2003
BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China's spending on online advertising grew to 360 million yuan ($1=CNY8.28) in the first half of 2003, putting it on track to beat forecasts for the full year, a local research firm said.

Advertisers are now allocating more money to Internet-based advertising: online ads accounted for 0.64% of China's total advertising spending in the first half, up from 0.55% in 2002, Shanghai iResearch Co. said Tuesday.

The firm said online advertising spending in full-year 2003 could exceed the CNY620 million it had previously forecast, though it didn't give a new prediction.

Shanghai iResearch figures put China's total online advertising spending at CNY490 million in 2002 and CNY390 million in 2001. It didn't give an exact comparison between spending in first half 2003 and first half 2002.

China's three major Internet portals, Sohu.com Inc. (SOHU), Sina.com (SINA) and Netease.com Inc. (NTES), all rely to various degrees on online advertising. All three reported strong growth in such revenue during the first half.
