It is not a reference to the future, it is a reference to the past. It simply makes the point that if it were possible for our remote ancestors to all be gay, we very likely would have died out as a species. If we somehow survived, supposing that some could become aroused and manage heterosexual sex, it still would have been in dwindling numbers, with eventual likely extinction. It is to emphasize that which one is the norm is not a matter of indifference, but directly affected our future as a species.
