Powells Visit Bush at His Texas Ranch
By ELISABETH BUMILLER - NEW YORK TIMES

CRAWFORD, Tex., Aug. 5 - Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage arrived at President Bush's ranch late this afternoon for dinner and for discussions about foreign policy on Wednesday, White House officials said.

Mr. Powell disembarked from his plane in the nearby city of Waco and the 101-degree heat with his wife, Alma, who accompanied Mr. Powell and Mr. Armitage to the 1,600-acre ranch. Mr. Powell made no public comments about a report in The Washington Post, published on Monday and denied by the White House, that he and Mr. Armitage would not serve in a second Bush term.

Mrs. Powell does not often travel with her husband. On Monday, an aide to Mr. Powell said he was unhappy about the suggestion, widely discussed in Washington, that his wife had demanded that he not serve in a second term.

Scott McClellan, the White House press secretary, said again today that Mr. Powell's meeting with the president was scheduled a week or two earlier and had nothing to do with the published report. Mr. McClellan said Mr. Bush, Mr. Powell and Mr. Armitage would discuss the Middle East, North Korea, Iraq and Liberia, among other subjects. Condoleezza Rice, Mr. Bush's national security adviser, who is staying at the president's ranch, will join in the discussions.

Vice President Dick Cheney will arrive on Thursday, Mr. McClellan said, for discussions with Mr. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who is expected on Friday.
