None of the folks at my husband's company knew the layoff was coming. It was announced the same day that people were let go.

I'm thinking of buying stock in the manufacturing firm that will now be handling their production line.

As workers get laid off, those of us who remain get increases in salary. I get twice as much as I got at the height of the boom years to do the work which had been done by 4 or 5 people. That gets recorded as productivity, but the reality is that variety and innovation is lost (at least in my fields). In the meantime all of the roles which supported my efforts are outsourced to India.
