SBC Communications announced a groundbreaking initiative to deploy more than 20,000 Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) hot spots in 6,000 venues over the next three years.
The new Wi-Fi service, to be called FreedomLink, will be available by the end of 2006 in more than 6,000 hotels, airports, convention centers and other venues throughout the SBC 13-state region. This news may be viewed as a positive for Sierra Wireless, the maker of Wi-Fi data communications equipment such as modems and OEM modules. The shares of SWIR rose more than 15% on Jul 9 when AT&T announced plans to begin offering remote wireless access to its industry-leading virtual private network services from more than 2,000 access points in at least 20 countries.
