That's the right comparison for Rush Limbaugh, Bob Grant, et al. No, it's not. People have tried for years to catch Rush in a lie, and they haven't. Moore routinely lies, and the press lets it go. Roger Simon agrees with me in his blog today about Dowd. Time for her to move on. A Not-So-Modest Proposal -- TERM LIMITS FOR OP-ED WRITERS It is becoming clear to me that op-ed writers should have term limits, just as politicians do. Most columnists, even excellent ones, burn out; mere mortals not of the stature of, say, Shakespeare or Goethe only have so much to offer (and of the course those geniuses weren?t wasting their time writing for daily newspapers). Nowhere is this more obviously in evidence than at The New York Times, which is now undergoing a gradual regime change. Although one new columnist (David Brooks) has been brought in, turning to the op-ed page of the Times still induces serious glazed-eye syndrome. And this is not because of their ideology. It is because they have been there for too long. We all know what they are going to say in advance. Two sentences into the average column and it?s over. This morning when I strained to slog through LaDowd?s latest, only to find she was still flogging the same clichés about neocons undermining the real war on terror, whatever that is and as if she could tell us, I knew I had had enough. In her case, it?s difficult to determine how she got the job in the first place, but even for those for whom we can, like Paul Krugman who has genuine expertise in one area, there are plenty of replacements (the world does not have a shortage of economists, to my knowledge). So here?s my suggestion: four years maximum and out. Give the person a Golden Parachute as we do in Hollywood, if that?s necessary, but get them off the op-ed page. Let them go do something different, like writing a novel or hiking in Tibet. Anything. Then maybe, just maybe, if their batteries are sufficiently recharged, they could have their column back, though I would recommend it be at a different newspaper. By the way, this goes for bloggers as well. There?s only so long we can go without repeating ourselves. I know. I?ve done it myself and I?ve only been at it for four months.rogerlsimon.com
