Are you actually asking me why they don't happen more quickly? Over time it probably would be bred out if it was not needed. But genes have long memories. For an excellent treatment of this, I recommend "The Ghosts of Evolution"- a really super book. Lots of fun.

sickle cell HOMOZYGOUS makes people sick, but it is so beneficial to the population that it is carried, because it is so valuable in the heterozygous form.
