I don't know your father personally but from just that statement I can make a pretty good guess. He wouldn't have told you much more even if had you asked him, other then periphery kind of things. Your father and the merchants were some under appreciated and truly great men. The war would have never been won without their bravery and absolute junk victory ships that were slammed together many per day. And with very little in the way of appreciation.

My husbands father was a merchant marine too! He lied about his age and when they found out, it was too late.

He never talked about his experiences either. After the war he became a ships captain. Was an active member of the local ILA until his death.
