Re your sound problem. It may be obvious, but have you clicked on the speaker icon on your task bar and made sure the mute button is unchecked. Every once in awhile my mute button becomes checked without my doing anything that I am aware.

Also go into control panel, system devices and make sure your sound codecs are not corrupted.
