We did well to navigate a treacherous period of human history where nuclear war was always only one miscalculation away -- and to be sure, there were times when we almost fell into the trap of nuclear war with the Soviets. Containment and patience served us far better than the alternative -- global thermonuclear war. World War II, nuclear arms control and the eventual bankrupting of the Soviet Union were all examples of America prevailing as a true world leader. Vietnam was a military defeat, but more importantly, it was a reminder that we cannot take for granted that we are always right to go to war or that we will always win if we do go to war. Iraq is a reminder that we can get completely off track when a small group of ideologues shape our foreign policy agenda. These ideologues serve themselves first and put the interests of the United States second. I do not like that.
