If you have only one drive in the system, the jumper should be in the NEUTRAL setting (or removed - same thing). If the new drive is being added to a system that already has a drive, jumpers are needed on both drives. Your new drive is an IDE, and the page link shows what to do.

Go to www.wdc.com website, then click on the Support button on the top of the menu, then try Downloads. Have your son experiment until he gets the correct information, but I am sure either the information is there or he can contact wdc for it. I wish your boy good luck on his ambitious project.
