Israel is a magnet for terrorism -- if you have not noticed that I do not know where you have been. Our need for oil shapes our relationship with people like the Saudi royal family, and our willingness to help keep unpopular autocratic rulers in power so long as they play the game our way and keep the oil coming. The two primary causes of terrorism are Israel, based on deep hatred of the idea of a "Jewish homeland" in an arab-dominated part of the world, and our vulnerability to oil-supply shocks, which inclines us to do things that fan anti-American hatred.
