If they want a living legacy, they'd better get on board with the idea of sustainability. I don't see any willingness to even acknowledge that doctrine in their policies, though. They don't want family planning...here in the US or anywhere US financial support goes. This planet, no one can argue, is finite. If the population keeps growing as it is, we will eventually weigh more than the earth itself. Do they plan and legislate with any sensitivity to that eventuality? Hmmm.....let's see... I can deduct the cost of my SUV if I have any 'legitimate' self-employment use for it. Hamburger costs LESS now than it did (adjusted for inflation) than when I was a kid. Still takes several pounds of grain and thousands of gallons of water to make a pound of beef but it's CHEAP. I spent 4 summers in the fishing industry in Alaska. I see how "rugged individualists" consider the ramifications of their actions generations down the line. People who fish wanted ZERO intervention from any government agency telling them when or where to fish. They will still argue that the King Crab population "migrated" under the polar ice cap. They didn't over fish the stock. Same goes for sardines in CA, cod and swordfish in the Northeast, etc... Like I said earlier, maybe I'm just ignorant but I'm unable to empathize with the motivation of a guy like Cheney. You could promise me Pam Anderson sex, Michelin 3 Star quisine, joyrides in FA-18's, cheering throngs....whatever. I think about how it would feel to be on the receiving end of those types of things compared to how it would feel to KNOW I was selling out sustainability and hence, our future, and I think it wouldn't be enough.
