China keen to study 30-baht health plan

Aphaluck Bhatiasevi

China hopes to learn from the Thai government's 30-baht healthcare scheme, Health Vice-Minister Zhu Qing Sheng has said.

The vice-minister, who began a week-long visit yesterday, said he was interested in the scheme because the government had managed to provide health security to 85% of people in two years. China hoped to introduce a similar scheme.

The country was home to one billion people, but its health security scheme covered only 100 million people.

The Chinese vice-minister will visit hospitals in Chiang Mai and Ayuthaya, to watch how they are run and the system for referring patients from community to provincial or regional hospitals.

Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said she would talk about setting up a Thai-Chinese traditional medicine institute with the Chinese deputy health minister
