Seabiscuit -- Both the book and the movie should provide tremendous inspiration. It's about the little guy, the underdog who overcomes tremendous odds to win races. In fact, I think the crazy horse ends up healing the jockey, the trainer, and the owner (jeff bridges)...It's the best movie I've seen in years. Full of inspiration and the type of film I could really enjoy seeing more than once...

Now I need to read the book. Yet, I saw an interview with the author on CNN last night. She has been battling chronic fatigue syndrome and is a real fighter...

Here are a couple of good reviews of the book...

SEABISCUIT: An American Legend

barntowire.com

Eclipse Award-winning writer Laura Hillenbrand's highly anticipated biography, SEABISCUIT: An American Legend, was released to bookstores this week. Described by Jonathan Karp, Random House Vice President, as "the best true story I have had the privilege to edit in my twelve years at Random House," SEABISCUIT is one of the most highly acclaimed new books of the year, receiving rave reviews from such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The Economist, The Chicago Tribune, and The New York Post, and from such writers as Sports Illustrated's William Nack, bestselling author Stephen Ambrose, and columnist Andrew Beyer.

Buy Seabiscuit: An American Legend, available at bookstores nationwide or through www.seabiscuitonline.com, and learn why this extraordinary biography has become the subject of a forthcoming Universal Pictures movie and earned reviews as rapturous as these:

"A first-rate piece of storytelling, leaving us not only with a vivid portrait of a horse but with a fascinating slice of American history as well....In telling the Cinderella story of Seabiscuit and his devoted trainer, owner and jockey, the author Laura Hillenbrand has written an absorbing book that stands as a model of sportswriting at its best." --Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

"Captivating....it is a flawless trip, with the detail of good history, the blistering pace of Biscuit himself and the charm of grand legend." --Jim Squires, The New York Times Book Review

"As good a book on thoroughbred racing as I have ever read....It is a remarkable story, and Hillenbrand tells it in a fashion that is often poetic....This is a story about the ultimate underdog, surrounded by memorable characters, and it is just as compelling today as it was in 1938." --Andrew Beyer, The Washington Post

"Good sports books are few and far between, good ones on racing even more so. So it is hugely refreshing when one as fine as this one comes along. The research is meticulous, the writing elegant and concise, so that every page transports you back to the period...This is a remarkable tale well told by a writer who deftly blends history and sport. SEABISCUIT should captivate a new generation of readers from beyond the world of horse racing." --The Economist

"Seabiscuit is one hell of a ride....Seabiscuit's triumph remains a terrifically appealing Cinderella story, but it's Hillenbrand's instinctual feel for the drama of the sport and her formidable literary talents that bring the tale to life. Best of all is the wonderful bowlegged swagger of Hillenbrand's voice." --W Magazine

"Laura Hillenbrand has written one of the best sports biographies in the history of the genre. Prodigiously reported, beautifully crafted, and touched throughout with lyrical grace, the book is a marvelous narrative of nonfiction that reads like a novel. From the starting gate to the wire, Seabiscuit is one memorable read." -- William Nack, Sports Illustrated

"Terrific....Hillenbrand brings alive the potent power that human beings feel when seated astride a horse flying down the track....Illuminating a forgotten piece of American history, Seabiscuit brings alive the drama, the beauty, the louche charm and the brutality of horseracing." --Deirdre Donahue, USA Today

"Fascinating...An arresting debut...Perhaps because Hillenbrand herself suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, she has tremendous, but never cloying, empathy for the damaged horses and jockeys who stoically accepted pain as part of their routine. But what chiefly distinguishes this account is the straightforward pleasure Hillenbrand takes in the accomplishments of her heroes, two-footed and four-footed alike. A track writer by profession, she plainly loves the world she writes about." -Malcolm Jones, Newsweek

"A charmer. This is a celebratory tale about an unlikely champion, a creature of personality and persistence.." --Allyson Hagy, Chicago Tribune Book Review

"Terrific writing....A fascinating account of one of the sport's most alluring icons....Hillenbrand's great triumph with Seabiscuit is that she never abandons the story...Rather, she provides a rich history of horse racing on the West Coast, her cinematic prose imparting a wonderful flavor of the times. As a result, Seabiscuit often reads like a novel." -- Debra Ginsberg, San Diego Union Tribune

"Hillenbrand's detailed and dramatic re-creation of Seabiscuit's life and times is a remarkable testament to what four years of meticulous research and a writer's gift for storytelling can accomplish. And it's mighty good reading, even if you're not a racing fan." --Booklist (starred)

"This is more than a fine piece of writing about the sport of racing; it is also about our history. I wish all sportswriters could write like this." --best selling author Stephen Ambrose

Hang tough, Brosie...

You are going to come out the other side refreshed, renewed and focused.

I like your thoughts on bringing back Bradley, Wesley Clark is someone we need to look seriously at, also.

Thinking of you, Scott

john-

that's my plan too - read the book,
then see the movie - but your timing
is better <s>

seeing as how you are a jeff bridges fan,
you might want to see this one too:

"masked & annonymous" staring bob dyan,
jeff bridges, john goodman, jessica
lange, luke wilson, angela bassett,
ed harris, giovanni ribisi. quite an
impressive list, no?

it's a black comedy (very fitting for
the times me thinks) but has had mixed
reviews.

i'm gonna see it anyway.
