TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Foundry chip supplier United Microelectronics Corp. said Friday (August 8, 2003) that its sales for the month of July were NT$7,010 million (about US$204 million) down sequentially by 0.2 percent but 4.3 percent ahead of UMC's July 2002 sales. UMC's July sales followed a pattern similar to that of rival foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) although TSMC announced that its July 2003 sales were 30.4 percent ahead of its July 2002 sales (see August 7 story). However, UMC's sales growth for the year-to-date is exceeding TSMC's UMC's sales revenue for the period January to July 2003 was NT$46.6 billion (about US$1.35 billion) 24.4 percent of the company's sales for January to July 2002, the company said. On Thursday TSMC announced its sales for the year-to-date were running 14.3 percent ahead of the same period in 2002.
