It was about preserving the Union from Lincoln's POV. The 1860 Republican platform did not call for the abolition of slavery, nor did Lincoln. It and he did absolutely oppose the westward expansion of slavery. The South knew that ultimately that limitation would destroy slavery; they had to hold on to their ability to block legislation. Lincoln also held that a state could not legally secede from the Union and the Founders intended it that way. Had the Founders known that, there would have been no United States.
